Opinions please

I purchased this silk fabric about 15 years ago. While I was drawn to the texture and colors, I didn't know what to do with it then and I don't know what to do with it now.

Here's where I need your opinion. I think it's time to finally use the fabric but can't decide what to sew out of it. A jacket perhaps? Something with simple lines. Perhaps this 80s Vogue pattern (by the way, it came from Pattern Rescue) but would combining 15 year old fabric with a 20 year old pattern scream DATED and OUT OF FASHION?

I know how creative you all are so bring it.

a skirt or jacket but that jacket does have rather large shoulder pads so it would scream 80s. it would go nicely with navy and black to tone it down.

  2. I would definitely go with a jscket. That way you can pair it with pants, a skirt or wear it over a dress! Love it BTW!

  3. A timeless Chanel-style jacket would be nice.

  4. Sharon - I like the combination. The only thing I would watch is to make sure you don't have 80s shoulders! Definitely cut them back abit! Otherwise quite a few designers showed that look in their spring 2010 lines...so you are right in style! Besides classic never goes out of style!!!

  5. I'm lovin' the jacket, especially in that fabric. Not so sure about the skirt, though. The "80's shoulder" silhoutte is big (no pun intended) this fall

  6. I think that pattern looks classy and timeless. I don't think it looks outdated at all. And the fabric does look pretty! Go for it!

  7. I agree with one of the previous comments. It's begging to be a chanel style jacket. Never out of style since the 50's. If you have enough material, a straight skirt with it.

Take a look at the dress made out of a very similar fabric on page 42 of BWOF May 2009. Your fabric might be too heavy for this kind of dress, but I think you should do something with a little special styling to it so it doesn't look dated. You're right that it is a concern, but that stunning fabric will make up in something spectacular. You just have to search for it until it hits you as "the one."

I could easily see the jacket there in this fabric -- gorgeous!

  10. Well, my opinion is always to avoid anything that looks like the 80s. ;) I do think a jacket would be great, but as more of the Chanel-jacket look or a more fitted, tailored style. No big shoulder pads, please.

  11. Yes, yes, yes. Big shoulders are on the way BACK! (Sorry, girls, I am in fact old enough to have worn them the first time - i have done platforms twice over too - and the big advantage of Biiiiiiig shoulders is how very slim they make your hips look!) Great fabric and it would look great in that kind of jacket with a squareish cut.

  12. I like the look of this pattern with that fabric. If you want a trimmer jacket, do investigate the Hot Patterns jacket by following Jen's link. Yes, the 80's could get a bit over the top, but I still maintain that there was some cute fashion going on, hence the recent interest.
