Flashback Friday - 1989 and gold lame

Ever since I was a teen (and sewing my own clothing) I followed the fashion trends. I understood color, I understood texture and I understood proportions. My sense of style was such that many friends and co-workers decided what was currently fashionable based on what I was wearing that season.

However, there were times when I mistook a fad for a fashion trend.

Witness Christmas 1989 and the gold lame top. And I must admit that I did indeed sew this for myself. A simple pullover, dolman sleeve top.

At least I had enough sense to pair it with basic black and not over accessorize.

Did you also fall victim to the over-the-top eighties glitz? Pin It

  1. I was a bit young for the lame top, but I had my share of 80's drama. Glitter eye shadow, sky high bangs.Bubble skirts.
But yesterday I was sorely tempted to jump back to 80's lame style...I needed tights at Target and found on the hanger next to my tights...gold lame footless tights! They were awesome. But not appropriate for someone old enough to have worn similar the first time ;)
You looked cute in your top. Very festive! :)

  3. Gold lame was a fad? Oh no, I have to rethink my whole fashion sense from that period!

  4. I hated the 80's for the hair and fashion. Even today when I see teal fabric I think of Joan Collins and Dynasty!

  5. I remember the 80's well, graduated in 86. I remember and wore the harem pants. I worked at a clothing store, so I had a pair of harem pants in an ombre in rayon with a matching top I wore to school, work, out, etc. Also remember the conch belts, denim skirts with a yoke, etc. And yes, went through the big hair, spiked for a while on top, blue eyeshadow. Lots of fun and great music.

  6. Quick, purge the closet! haha Seriously, I saw those gold lame tights at Target, too, and showed them to my DD. Even she didn't want them (but deep down in there was a moment. . .)

  7. I don't remember gold lame tops - perhaps that fad did not reach our shores. I do remember oversized tsirts with shoulder pads and applique.....and sewing a lot of stretch fabrics into sack type garments...

  9. Can't say I did, seeing as how I was still a kid at the end of the 80's and my mom made most of my clothes. ;) Can't say I'm sorry, since the 80s is pretty much my least favorite fashion decade ever. Was that a huge pain to sew?

  10. I was 18 back in 1989. I followed almost every fashion fad if it "fit" me. I had a silver lame shirt that I used to wear with a short pleather skirt! I had a perm most of my highschool years and wore leggings back them and I am so happy they are back. Today I went to the mall and I stopped at Forever 21 and was happy to see a pair of flower pantyhose. I was with my mom and we commented on the pair I used to have back in the 80's. I was and still a fashion victim sometimes!

I had a gold lame cardigan style jacket that I literally wore to shreds. I put it on to go to discos, parties, dates, even CBGB.....underneath I usually wore a tiny black skirt, a TUBE top(!) and pumps...... and of course THE HAIR.

    Fun days!
